Q:How do I Sign-up to TGS Tournaments?

A: To Sign-up, you must first go on the proposed Challonge bracket. Once on the said page, you will find, first thing, the “Sign-up” button (It’s big, it’s blue with a white text inside), it is located on the top left hand corner of the tournament page. Once you press this button, it will ask you under which name you would actually like to sign-up. Once you’ve input all this information, you’re signed up for the tournament! Do not forget to Check-in afterwards, though!

Q: How do I check-in?

A: Once the tournament is in a Check-in phase (Usually an hour before the actual start), check the top left hand corner of the tournament page. You should see a check in button, which you have to click.

Q: I signed up, does that mean I check-in?

A: No, A button on the top left hand corner on challonge shows up an hour before each tournament. You must click that button to check in. Failure to do so means you will not be in the tournament.

Q: Can I check in by just telling a Tournament Organizer I’m there?

A: No. You MUST check in the correct way or you won’t be participating in the tournament.  If you do not see the button, you will need to refresh the page for it to appear.

Q: I forgot to/could not check-in, am I going to get banned?

A: If you do not check-in, you will not be able to participate. This does not result in a ban, in anyway, but please, next time, make sure to join a tournament you will play! We’d love to see you on the field.

Q: When are the brackets finalized?

A: Brackets can be shuffled and reshuffled until the very last second before a tournament begins! Brackets are not final until a Tournament Organizer says so, or that he announces : “TOURNAMENT START!”.

Q: Should I add people on the bracket?

A: Not until a Tournament Organizer says the brackets are finalized.

Q: My name isn’t on the bracket! What do I do?

A: This could be a few things:

  • You may have signed up incorrectly.

  • You may have not checked-in.

  • It may be possible you have been awarded a Bye because there is an odd number of participants. This means you may not have a match that round. That’s okay, just wait patiently until the next round.

Q: What are Swiss Brackets? How do they work?

A: In Swiss Brackets, there are at least four rounds for EVERYONE to play, no matter if you lost or won your last match! You are judged by a series of rounds. Based on your overall performance, you will obtain a certain rank after the last round, depending on tournament turnout and the discretion of the TO you may make the top cut!

Q: What Happens when the Round reaches its time limit?

A: Everyone gets tied. Keep in mind that when you are tied, challonge will treat this as a loss for both parties.

Q: How do we pick the first stage to play on?

A: There are two methods. You can have a gentleman’s pick where each of you just agree to the first stage. But most people use a procedure called Stage Striking. When players strike stages they each take turns picking a stage they do not want to play on in a set order. The order for our events is 2-3-1.

Let’s say we have two players, Stef and Robert. Stef gets to strike first, so she gets to strike 2 stages she doesn’t want to play on. Say she strikes Dreamland 64 and Final  Destination, those stages are now struck. It is Robert’s turn, and he gets to strike 3 stages. He strikes Town & City, Lylat Cruise and Smashville because he does not want to play on them. Stef gets the last strike. The last strike is important, because the stage that remains will be the stage chosen on for the first game. Stef strikes Duck Hunt. Since the only stage left is Battlefield, that will be the stage they play on.

Q: How does counterpicking work?

A: The person who lost the previous match gets to choose the stage. There are a few restrictions on this, however. First, the winner of the previous match gets to ban 2 stages that cannot be chosen. Please note that a player cannot choose the stage they most recently won on (Check Dave’s Stupid rule). The winner must declare their character first, and the loser declares their character last.

Q: Do bans stack after every game?

A: No, bans will refresh after each game. If your opponent banned Final Destination and Lylat Cruise, they get unbanned after the game is over. That means, you will have to ban Final Destination or Lylat Cruise again.
